Born into a family of New England craftsmen, John Patriquin's immersion in fine craftsmanship began in childhood his father was a traditional house builder and renovator, and his grandfather an authentic early 20th c. blacksmith.
John's training began with a traditional apprenticeship in wood furniture construction with noted furnituremaker and author Simon Watts at the Putney, Vermont workshop. To balance this practical grounding in technique with the visual concepts of design, John went on to study fine art, design, and architecture at the University of Washington School of Art in Seattle.
These experiences were woven together and culminated in 1986 with a BFA degree in furniture design from Boston University's well respected Program in Artisanry. The Program's primary focus was innovative problem solving, and key faculty included Jere Osgood, known for his pioneering studio furniture techniques.
John's innovation driven design philosophy coupled with his extensive knowledge of traditional design and technique, form the heart of his life long commitment to excellence in design and craftsmanship.
